If the oil isn't burning, it must be leaking.
Sounds like it may be the rear seal. How's the clutch and bellhousing? May need a drain.
G'day guys, just thought i'd pick your brains on a couple of issues.
I've just purchased a 75 model 2.25 petol, SWB as a project. When i get the chance i'll post some pics.
Anyway its in RWC at the moment, but seems to use a whole lot of oil. Last weekend i drove it the 250 or so K's home (mainly highway at 90km/H) and it went from the high mark to well below low (oil pressure light came on). On start up there is a puff of white smoke but then its not really smokey at all (none noticeable as the driver). During the trip at one stage it stalled on me on the highway, but i got her going again by manually pumping fuel through the lever at the bottom of the fuel pump.
And it made it up the toowoomba range going 50km/H so performance wise it seems good.
It also seems to be loosing a bit of coolant somewhere, but nothing too significant. And it leaks a bit of oil from somewhere around the rear of the engine or a bit further back
Just wondering what you guys reckon is going on? could it be worn rings and need a top end rebuild? What kind of money would i be looking at to get that done? Could i get away with running a really thick oil? And is there any change it could be somthing better or worse than rings?
I will appreciate any suggestions as i'm not very mechanically minded, just have a love of these older cars.

The drain hole on the bottom of the bellhouseing could be blocked if you want to drain it just use some wire to free the blockage thats only if it leaks from the rear seal..

Basically there are only two possibilities - it is leaking or its burning it.
If it is leaking, it is just a matter of finding where it is coming out - a good clean down and a bit of eyeballing should show where it is going. Likely places are both ends of the crankshaft and the rocker cover gasket, and possibly the oil feed to the head. If there are oil leaks from every possible place, suspect either worn, stuck or broken compression rings or faulty crankcase ventilation.
If it is burning it, there are several likely sources (and it may be more than one.).
1. Valve stem seals - fairly easy and cheap to replace (in my experience the most likely)
2. Worn, stuck or broken rings - a lot more work, and can get expensive, particularly if a rebore is needed.
3. PCV diaphragm is perforated, so that oil splash and vapor is being sucked into the manifold. - cheap and easy to fix.
Hope this helps

my IIA had an aweful leak out of the rocker cover. It used to leak out of the passengar side and dribble onto the exhuast headers where is would burn leaving a plume of white smoke wherever I went
A new gasket and new crush washers fixed the problem slightly but not entirely...
Mine would also rain down oil from the sump when it was parked, after 5 mins there would be 6 or so different pools of oil about 2-3" in diameter.
It used to use a bit of oil but not as much as you seem to be, I just used Castrol GTX and always kept plenty spare with me. It was cheap enough to just keep toppping it up ever time i drove it (weekend truck).
The way you are going, you will only have to change you oil filter every 3000miles and not worry about the oil as it will always have a fresh supply. Check you PCV valve as other have said![]()
It doesnt seem to leak alot of oil now that i'm looking at how much its been dripping on the garage floor, but is it possible that it would suddenly leak alot more oil while its being driven around?
Also, today when after i went to top up the oil etc i had her running for about 15mins in the garage, then when i turned off the ignition a fair amount of smoke came up at the front of the engine. Is that anything to worry about? It started up fine straight afterwards.
If the leak is from anywhere that is pressure fed, or if the leak is accelerated by crankcase pressurisation, then it will leak a lot more when running, especially at high power or high revs. Smoke from the front of the engine when shutting down suggests a leak onto the exhaust manifold, probably from the rocker cover gasket.

If it blows a puff of white/blue smoke on startup, then it is likely the valve stem seals need replacing.
I assume the SIII has the closed breather system. I have seen a few cases where the compression rings have broken, and the engine is spewing huge amounts of oil out the breather...
