    Landy Conversions

    Hi all,
    Series Landies have been adapted to all manner of uses, be they mobile or stationary, retaining their originality or being near-unrecognisable.

    Here's a contraption:




    Dan Nemeth converted his Series IIa to run on rails. Dan wrote:
    ...some pics of the landy I converted for a customer to run on 2' based on New Zealand's logging railways, the conversion has not changed the original landy chassis in any way every thing bolts to the spring hangers as would the axle and then using the original back axle just fitted higher chains run from sprockets that go on the wheel studs drive the rear axle.
    The landy can be converted from road to rail in a morning

    I understand Bobslandies has part of a Series 1 that was converted into a sawmill powerplant or winch, I have heard of bodiless Landies being sold to make all terrain forklifts, there was a hovercraft Landy too.
    Does anyone else have info or photos on weird and wonderful Series Landy conversions?

    There is also a pic of the Land Rover HiRail previously at Glenreagh Mountain Railway (which almost cost it it's authority) but I can't access it ATM.

    Iirc there's a company in Tasmania running tours on an old rail line using converted Defenders?

    What did happen with Glenreagh ?

    My understanding is that they don't and can't operate anyway - any info would be appreciated.

    I was talking to the owner? at Dorrigo recently who didn't have a good word to say about them - perhaps the attitude at the other end of the track is the reverse of this

    At least the Glenreagh End did operate for a time. AFAIK the Dorrigo end hasn't run at all.

    The GMR needs to be certified under new national railway legislation (the same as if they were State Rail or any other rail company on the main lines) and they are in the process of training up staff. Unfortunately in the past they laid concrete sleeper seconds and under the legislation these have to be removed and replaced with first quality. They also have a bridge that was damaged by bushfire which also needs major engineering work. So if they are ever run again they will need someone with deep pockets to provide funding.

    As for the Land Rover, the problem with it was that it breached rules for a HiRail, it that it only had the steel railway wheels and had never been certified for the braking capabilities to run on the rail.
