It also depends on what repairs need doing. If you are replacing a whole crossmember, etc then someone will notice, but if you just need to put patches in then you can do that so no one will be even to tell where you have been.

I've been contemplating this situation myself as the gearbox crossmember on my Series III is stuffed and will need replacing. My mate - who is a boilermaker - will be doing the repair, but as I'm only doing a preservation, not a restoration, the chassis isn't going to get painted in full, so it will be obvious to whoever does the RWC will notice it. I suppose time will tell.

I suppose a few rattle cans of satin black paint and I could get to most of the chassis, so who knows...

If I was going to repair a gearbox crossmember on a civilian SIII, I'd be making it removable like on the SIII army and SIIb forward controls.

I've heard of that but not seen it done - would you have any pics showing what it should all look like when done?

I'm sure 1 of my 109's have a removable gearbox crossmemeber... not army either. I should check that.

Thanks to every1 with thoughts. Going to give the suspect chassis a better look at before too much is done.

While I was under Willy this morning doing some oil changes I found that he in fact has a removable cross member! here are some pics.... I find it amusing that the muppets didn't like the look of a fillet weld in the rear of the chassis but didn't have any problems with this!!

have at it, all landrover box style chassis can be repaired by welding in replacement components.

The chassis metal is only mild steel and gets its strenght from the shape of the metal not the type of metal.

There are right ways and wrong ways of doing it. I have no doubt that I can weld well enough to make the required repairs on a chassis but I dont do it. I tack the parts in where I want them and then either hire in or take the chassis to a professional welder.

Is it legal to Galvanise a chassis after repair?


I am happy to paint it black afterwards but I want to have it dipped at the local Gal works after I weld in the repair sections.
I have had several trailer chassis I have build dipped and reckon its worth the cost.

I have heard of people doing it. I don't see that there would be an issue because you don't need ot drill any extra holes or anything. Would be a good upgrade IMO, pity I don't have money to do it.
