In series 1 and series 2 you could fill the gearbox through that hole, with a spring retained cap on the top of the selector cover. Very early boxes even had a dip stick.
However early in Series 2a they fitted a permanent plug in the selector top and you had to fill the box through the level plug on the side of the box.
The S1 tunnel had a trap door but in S2 it became a rubber grommet.
