Thread: Mysterious hole in Trans tunnel

In series 1 and series 2 you could fill the gearbox through that hole, with a spring retained cap on the top of the selector cover. Very early boxes even had a dip stick.
However early in Series 2a they fitted a permanent plug in the selector top and you had to fill the box through the level plug on the side of the box.

The S1 tunnel had a trap door but in S2 it became a rubber grommet.

Is this for anything in particular? Is it standard and have a bung that goes into it or should I plate it over?

It is in this pic, but obscured by the overdrive lever.

There are actually two of those holes. Your overdrive lever is actually blocking one of them up. There is a rubber grommet Part Number 334189. The same holes and grommets are present in the Series III. Apparently it allows visual inspection and access to the gear box tunnel.

That's about where the filler cap is on a S1 gearbox. I removed the blanking plate on my S2A gearbox and replaced it with a S1 filler cap . A lot easier to fill the gearbox.
The PO may have done the same. .W.

Ahhh, very interesting. Thanks all. I'll blank it off or fit a grommet to it in that case.

I'm a total novice to Land Rovers so can't in any way comment on them, however, it was common in British vehicles from that period to have such inspection ports and by cripes they made life a lot easier than later models without them.
