    ROPS

    Thinking aloud,
How would one best fits ROPS, for running a soft top ????
Whilst still in the Chassis stage of rebuilt, what could I add, reinforce, now I have the chance.
    Thanks

In most States this will require engineering - even if you find an off the shelf roll cage - which are available from the UK.

Not saying you shouldn't do something if you want to, but it may make rego a bit more complicated - although I'm not sure what the exact requirements are in NSW.

You can build roof rack that transfers the load to the chassis ,

See if you can find a Perentie tub. There have been a few up for sale.

Funny, isn't it. You want to make the car safer and they throw all sorts of obstacles in your way.

    My 88 had a roll cage that I removed...unbolted and I don't think I will reinstate

    IMG_1938.jpgIMG_2206.jpgIMG_1937.jpg

legs welded to chassis took 4 rear uprights on cage front angled legs bolted to firewall windscreen lock up bracket.

I suspect this arrangement is what led to spot-welds in my bulkhead failing

when I bought vehicle it had registration plates (expired)so I'm assuming this cage was accepted by rego authorities

cage itself is stored under my neighbours house can take some pics if you want

    Cheers Paul

I have pondered this also WHB.
Do the Perentie ROPSs anchor onto the tub capping or do they go through to the chassis?
My thoughts were to fabricate up a main hoop behind the seats, mainly to capture the upper seat belt mounts when I remove my hard top. I would set the hoop so it sat inside the profile of the hard top sides & roof so I could keep it with the hard top on also. I would include stays back along the sides also. I was just going to anchor to the capping and large pad mounts onto a stronger part of the tub itself.

Interested to know other people's thoughts also.

The most satisfactory way of fitting ROPS to Series (or Defender) is to provide a lower section that bolts or is welded to the chassis and terminates in a flat plate against the bottom of the side seat section of the tub, mating with a matching plate on top and throughbolted, with the actual ROPS welded to this upper plate. A minimal system would require four such attachments for the hoop and diagonal bracing. The major advantage, as I see it, is solving the upper seat belt mount issue for a soft top, but because of the need for engineering and one off fabrication, it is going to be expensive, and probably take a significant amount of space.

Except in competition, my experience over nearly sixty years of driving Series Landrovers is that rollovers are extremely rare. In fact I don't think I can recall a single example I have seen or has happened to anyone I know or know of.

Why does it have to be engineered? (I'm not talking quality of workmanship)
If you dont call it a ROPS who will check? I understand moving the belt attachment would need approval,, but why move it?
as Fitzy said,, you dont need approval for a roof rack (which on a 2 door soft top would do the same job)
