    Accelerator shafts - Series 3

    Hello from Brisbane.

The Heath-Robertson accelerator set up for the 2.25 litre petrol engine in my Series 3 includes two cylindrical shafts. I am now missing one of them after they got mixed up in a shipment of parts that were sent to a powder coating firm and subsequently lost.

The two parts are (236658) Accelerator Pedal Shaft and (577304) Accelerator Cross Shaft.

Not sure which of the two I still have, but could work that out by trying it on the bulkhead.

    Anyway, my questions are:

    • Does anyone happen to know the dimensions of the two rods - i.e. length and diameter?

    • Does anyone have one on a wreck that they are happy to part with?

    Hopefully, around Brisbane......

Also, not sure if the same parts were used on the Series 2A's as well?

    Cheers,

    Neil

    Solved.

    Hello again.

Found the answers to both questions.

    Hello again.

Make that Heath Robinson and it will be even clearer.

    Age and memory issue there.

I googled "Heath Robinson" and it makes no sense at all to me in the context of Series throttle shaft. Please enlighten

I should still have all the original shafts & linkages in my junk pile if you need them as I have 'fly by wire' throttle

    Hello from Sherwood.

William Heath-Robinson was an English cartoonist who drew pictures involving exceedingly elaborate contraptions for undertaking relatively simple tasks. Something referred to as a “Heath-Robinson” generally makes that link.

The throttle set up on a Series Land Rover is a case in point. All those rods, brackets, shafts, springs etc could have been replaced by a simple cable arrangement which is what was done with the Defenders and your own conversion.

Keen to follow up on the shafts with you.

    Cheers,

    Neil

OK that makes sense now. I'll rescue my shafts from the oddments box before they get repurposed.

    Hello again.

Actually, it’s probably as well that Heath-Robinson didn’t design the throttle linkage. It would have been more complicated and there would have been an alarm clock to wind and the mouse in the treadmill to feed.....

    Cheers,
