Four cylinder valve tappets and valve train

Hello, I can't seem to find an 'engine' section , so posting here. I have a S2 4 cyl with zero compression on #1. Removed the rocker cover. Inlet valve jammed open. With engine at #1 TDC I can 'tap' the adjuster and the pushrod moves down and the valve closes. So valve is free. But it seems the 'slide / cam follower' is jammed in some way. Can this happen on these engines ?
Engine ran up until recently. Been in garage for a few months for other work. Thanks.

You're in the right section. No doubt many knowledgeable people will be along soon.

yep, it can just be a little rust..

put some lube on the stem under the spring and work the engine a few turns and give it few taps.

you can also just lihgtly bounce a hammer on the top of the stem while you spray some lube on it.

if it fress up it'll run but it will use oil. as a minimum you'll need to replace the seal, at worst you'll need to pull the head to replace the valve and have the guide reworked.

being a square engine you can, if sufficiently psycotic, drop the valve onto the piston at tdc, lower the piston use a knurling tool in the guide and then use the piston to push the valve back home.

    before you ask.

    yes, I am.

He stated valve moves freely but the cam follower is sticking, I would suggest undoing the valve adjuster and removing pushrod. Then remove the cam follower insert(brass component) using internal expanding pliers pull the cam follower out. Clean up as required and reinstall. It was not stated if it was petrol or diesel so if it’s petrol you can’t lower the valve with the piston as there is a combustion cavity in the head which will not push valve closed as it does on a diesel when at TDC.
I have to amend above statement I was not thinking clearly and as it was early in the morning I can’t blame alcohol. You can’t remove the brass tappet insert without removing the head. If you can apply some oil to the sticking tappet by way of the pushrod hole and either rotate the motor by hand. To move the tappet up then force it down or remove the side plate and carefully lever it up and down it may come free. If not you will have to remove the head and address the issue.
Having just had a blown head gasket I can recommend using a composite gasket when replacing the head as the copper one I originally installed failed after 700 miles. The new one has already completed that and the head bolts did not move when I rechecked them after initial run.
