Do I give up a well sorted Td5 for a Puma?

I have got about 4 weeks to go and I give up my work dunnydore(thank god) and go back to using my own vehicle. Work is generously paying me 20kp/a for the privilage, so the coin required is not the issue.

I would like a quieter more user friendly version of the latest 130, with some of the Mod Cons that make everyday use more bearable, such as central locking, power windows, ability to plug in bluetooth hands free, proper aircon, a lighter clutch and the peice of mind of a new vehicle with a warranty.

But is it worth giving up my Td5?

It only has 115k on the clock and the things I would miss would be, the salisbury and Maxidrives, back seat box, all the additions and the peice of mind that it has had all the fixes and recommended mods done.

What do I do?

Ah, i was in the same boat as you here....

The old 300tdi was in tip top condition, and would have gone on for many more years, but as i use my car as a daily drive, something with alittle more comfort was required. I had already drove the new puma defender, and was very happy with it, outside its the same but the inside was like jumping 30 years forward, vast improvement on the older model. Its a pleasure to drive, and with the expanded range out there, at least you can pick one that best suits your needs....

Keep the Td5 for another 50k or more and the sell it if you are ready

peanut paste for the diffs, tcases, bits that hit each other and no guarantee that its not going to fall apart at the roof.

and an engine setup that wont be looked after by landrover for much after next year because something new will be coming out from the indians.

Went through this exact dilema,. took the plunge and brought a 2010 wagon. Certainly was stress full listening to all the woes on the Puma. Now rightly or wrongly we did the trade. Only just ticked over 1500km so cannot really comment on the reliability issues. However our TD5 had quite a few problems over time especially driveline. Got the car perfect but then lost confidence in the TD5 reliability.
The new car ceretainly drives niceley and I like the improvements. I think for some the acceptance of change and new technology can be hard. For me, well the people that build these cars know a lot more than I do. Yep they build for a price and market and that is also part of change but new technology can be a good thing to. We looked at the new defender as a platform for what we want to do. We have loaded it with a few accessories but left all drive lines areas standard other than LR HD springs. I think as with any new car there are bound to be a few problems. No different to other brands. Hopefuly we will get good life out of our new one. I think if we did not then this would be the last Landrover for us.

20k will keep you happy in a sorted td5 for a long time, adn all the stuff you have done to your curent car, to get it swaped or all new is going to cost more then 20k if you add it up,

so for me always td5 for the WIN

"Pull that td5 lump and replace it with a 4BD1"
Then you will be truly happy and all will bow before you !!!!!!

CC I appreciate that your only real consideration is "Should I replace my current 130DC with a new 130DC?" That says something to me. A 130DC is the PERFECT overall outfit - engines, gear bags and year models are mere details!!!

Get the new one and keep the old for when the new one is off the road may not happen but youwill know after 6 months then sell the old if you want or give it some poor series 111 owner

Surely sir you jest. I have a 4BD1 powered vehicle. Not going to happen, EVER.
