D3 TDV6 SE 18" Tyres
G'day
I have a Discovery 3 2009 TDV6 SE. It is fitted with 255/60/18 HT standard tyres. I have read countless threads on replacement AT tyres with no clear answers in regards to what fit and what dont. I am only interested in 18" all terrain tyres.
I read about Cooper Zeon ATZ 285/60/18 which apparently fit, however today i had one fitted to the car only to find it rubbing the metal chassis at the back of the front wheel arch when the suspension was raised and the steering at full lock. This tyres OD is 31.5" or 80cm. I looked at the BFG ATKO 265/65/18 and the OD is 31.7"
I want to fit the largest tyre possible to the car. Could anyone please give me a definitive answer to this problem. Preferably from someone with the same car who has the tyres fitted.
Cheers
Birky.

Birky, search the D4 zone as there's plenty of threads on this topic. There are now a choice of legal 18" tyres to choose from.
"Legality" depends on where you live but in QLD its 15mm (or is it %?) over the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I made an error in the original post. I ment Cooper Zeon LTZ (not ATZ). WhiteD3, your reply is much appreciated however I have read most of the previous posts and am finding it hard to get a definitive list of tyre possibities for the exact model as originally stated.

Hi Birky,
This topic has been covered lots and lots of times over the past 12 months.
I know it can take a really long time to read all of the threads - belive me I did it before I purchased my D3 earlier this year because I wanted to get as much info as I could before I jumped in with 50K of my own coin.
The FAQ's at the top of this section has answers to lots of questions
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/...4-rrs-faq.html
What's the largest and widest tyre I can fit?
Your state will probably limit you to no more than 15mm greater diameter (SA, WA 50mm) and 25mm wider than the largest tyres fitted as OEM, details of which can be found on the tyre placard in the driver's door jamb. However, people do run 265/70/17 successfully.
I see you want an 18 inch tyre
In this thread people confirm they can fit 265/60R18

This thread has useful comments about the next size up

And then there is this one

These threads all provide very good information about what will fit and what is available
enjoy your reading

Hi Birky,
I opted for standard size (255/60R18) Continental Cross Contact for reasons (amongst others) of keeping it legal for day to day driving. I may be looking for some taller off road rubber as a second set - so follow your delimer with interest.
The 285/60R18 Coopers are much wider (as well as taller) than the standard rubber. Were they fouling on the sidewall or tread area? Were they fouling on the inside or outside of the guard? If fouling on the sidewall a narrower tyre may be the answer. Did you try fitting the 265/65R18 BFG's and if so, did they foul?
I know from reading through this forum that some of the WA drivers are fitting 265/70R17 (31.9"dia), but on steel rims with +30mm offset (not legal in Vic), so if you are fouling the inside of the guard, this may be the reason.
Good luck with your tyre search and let us know.
Ian

Birky,
I've got stock standard GG 255/60R18 AT2's on my D3 and they perform great (in my opinion) no rubbing - just lots of fun !!!

Trobbo -- excellent post, thank you. I am copying it to the New Users thread as an example of what TO do when looking for answers.

G'day Forum
Thanks for the replies. I have done a bit more reading and have decided on the Cooper Discoverer ATR 265/60/R18. They have been confirmed as fitting the TDV6 SE 2009 D3. They have an OD of 774mm compared to the 800 mm of the Zeon LTZ which rubbed the chassis. They also have a load rating of 110 which is above the 109 minimum stated on the cars tyre placard.
Owl, the 285/60/R18 Cooper Zeon LTZ was fouling on the tread on the part of the chassis which is located on the rear of the front wheel arches. This only occurred when the suspension was raised and the wheels turned at full lock. However this was with the vehicle stationary. If you were in the sand for example with the tyres deflated bouncing around the tyre would move on the rim enough to cause a puncture in my opinion. This is a real shame as the tyres looked awesome on the car. I wish there was a 275/60/R18 option.
The OD of the BFG's is larger than the LTZ's so the same rubbing would occur.
Yeah the rim offset of after marked rims may solve some problems but at a large expense.
Thanks again
Birky.
