    Oil requirements new engines.

    Hey lads,

I've installed my new/recon engine and I've been told that I should run itnfor the 500K on running in oil, ..! What is that.....?

    Thanks

    Norm.

A lot of modern oils are so good at lubricating that they don't let piston rings bed in and seal properly. The engine ends up smoking even though everything has been reco'd.
A running in oil has no friction modifiers and effectively lets parts bed in then you replace with the correct lubricant.

I don't remember this being done in my younger days, you just did the first oil change at 1000miles because of the wear particles as everything bedded in. Back then friction modifiers probably weren't being used in oils.

You might get away with a really cheap supermarket 20W50 'no name' oil for the first 500. Don't 'stress' the engine during the run in period, no high revs and vary the load.

X2 what Gromit has said. I have just run in a reconditioned 2.25 petrol. I used the Penrite running in oil which has zero friction modifiers and let her trundle through the 1st 500km, kept under 80km/hr and didn't over rev or labour the engine. Oil was clear when I changed it and the filter.
She is now running on a standard 20w40 and hasn't used a drop of oil in the 2000km since then.
Very rewarding if the reco and running in are done properly.
