    Centre diff clutch usage

The oil in my transfer case was quite dark suggesting burnt only 60K Kms after it was last changed by the dealer. Obviously the clutch in the centre diff does a fair amount of work which is a little surprising for a vehicle whose off-road usage is only a few kms of gravel road each time it goes out. The e-diff oil will be changed shortly which I suspect will look similar, if not darker.

I am getting both diffs and transfer case oil changed on Thursday and I will be interested to see how they are as well. This will be the first oil change for these components since new (85,000km)
I have asked for the genuine oil for the Ediff and transfer case; the front used standard diff oil.

I used Syntrax LongLife (synthetic) in the front diff, being the current version of the LR specified oil. The old oil was a little discoloured/burnt? after 56K so with only 0.6L capacity the oil will be changed after 40K next time. LR oil was used in the TC and 2 bottles of LR e-diff oil should arrive tomorrow and they will also be changed after 40K in future. However I'm on the hunt for a RRV so hopefully it will be the next owners job.

When mine gets its first service I will be asking for all mechanical fluids to be changed.Guessing the coolant will be OK,just a money waste to change.

I had the diff oils in mine changed very early due to the diffs having hypoid gears then diffs and TC oils changed at 45K.

My D3 had issues with the rear diff being locked while driving around car parks at about 130,000KM. A oil change fixed the problem and the old oil was very black. I suspect that the dealer "forgot" to do the scheduled change of the transfer case and diff oils as I had never been billed for the oil ( unless the forgot to charge me for the oil )

130K is the LR change interval for the e-diff and transfer case for both normal and arduous use, with the front and rear open diffs 10 years unlimited kms. Well past end of warranty so LR just keeping scheduled maintenance costs down.

The D4's e-diff's oil was barely discoloured suggesting that its clutch plates had done much less work than the centre diff's clutch plates. It wont stop me wanting an e-diff in a RRV if I can find one though.
