    Blue smoke

When I started my TDV6 this morning, plumes of blue smoke came from the exhaust. It disappeared gradually went away after a minute or two of running but it was thick & it stank.

Now it was a cold morning in Canberra this morning, -2 or thereabouts, so I'm hoping this is the cause.

    Any thoughts

    Cheers

Is your car one that needed turbo drains rectifying? We had same issue on SDV6 but not sure it relates to TDV6

The problem of blue smoke caused by oil in secondary turbo tract was from a few years ago and IIRC from other threads was fixed from maybe MY12. EDIT: fix of updated drain pipe not confirmed by model year.

Here's a couple of related thread links:

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/...lue-smoke.html

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/...moke-lots.html ... and ... http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/...oke-issue.html

However, I think these ones were all symptomatic under acceleration (related to turbo coming on) rather than on start up in the morning, so perhaps not helpful to you. Possibly not relevant if yours is a newer model.

We have 2013.5 SDV6 RRS and it did not have the rectification done on delivery. Started blowing blue smoke on start up. Apparently LR did not fit the drains as matter of course.

Blue smoke on start up in a diesel is normally oil.White smoke that burns your eyes,is normally unburnt diesel.Black smoke whilst accelerating normally means power

    Hi Scott

Thanks for that, mine is a MY'14 model. It seemed to blow a lot less this morning when I started it, but it was still there.

I will keep an eye on it for the rest of the week and see how it goes. But it really stinks when it's starts too, even inside the car you can smell it

    Cheers

The problem can be as simple as too much oil in your sump. I had the same problem with blue smoke following a top up by myself after the electronic oil level indicated a top up was required. As a service was due, Jordan Rovertech checked it out and determined it was caused by a high level in the engine sump. Following the service no more blue smoke. Obviously the accuracy of the electronic dipstick is questionable.

    Smokey

I am no expert so I would be back to the dealer ASAP to get it checked!

Has your break fluid level dropped?
Happened to a friend years ago in a Rover, the seal let go on the master cylinder and break fluid got sucked into the engine, LOTS and LOTS of smoke. My feeling though is it is probably due to the cold morning oil getting sucked to where it should not be as the temperature drops. Maybe turbo? I would pull the output hose off the turbo and see it there is signs of a lot of oil.

I will find out tommorow if Ive done a turbo on my grader, its only done 715 hours!!!!
Hell of a rattle on startup yesterday,by time I got out of the cab and opened the service doors it stopped, came from the turbo area. Its been leaking exhaust gas, there is soot in the engine bay,no obvious leak.In the last 3 weeks its used 5 litres of oil, never used a drop in the past.
This morning no startup rattle, however it did force some oil out from between the manifold and the turbo mount, the dribble stain wasnt there the day before.Service is due at 750 hours,so they are doing it tommorow and bringing a turbo, just in case.
