    Swapping Sub-Forums

Firstly a 'Thank You' to all who have posted in the D3 / D4 / RRS sub-forum. Your comments and insights have assisted in moving me across from the D2 area

We now own a D3 and I took this photo on the way home having picked up the vehicle in Broome on Wednesday.

It's a June 2006 model so it has recently turned 9. The D2 is now 15

It is, as the rims suggest, an HSE. Zermatt Silver with the Black interior (which I am not a fan of, but then when on buys second hand )

We are the third owners. The first had it for 2 years and did 80,000 km. The second owner has had it since then.

The vehicle has done 219,000km. However at 155,000 km in late 2011 there was a bang and the original engine stopped - just after it went out of warranty! It was replaced with a second hand engine that had done 25,000 km. So the engine is coming up to about 90,000 km. In the not too distant future we will get the timing belts done (including oil pump housing) as we want to play safe.

When I asked about a steel pan on the transmission the previous owner laughed Oh ow...

He then went on to say it had been an extremely expensive few months as about three months later (~160,000 km) the transmission went bang It was replaced with a brand new unit (including steel pan) . So the transmission is just on 60,000 km old. That will be serviced VERY soon.

It needed a couple of new tyres which we had put on before I drove it back. I went with an LT and got the Bridgestone D 697's. (Yes Tombie, I HEARD YA, I HEARD YA! ) When it went to the tyre place the battery died so we did get a free new battery

Sixth rim is on the way, trailer connector has arrived, Mitch Hitch is ordered, LLAMS will be once they are in stock (which I am informed should be Monday) and down the track a dual battery kit installed. Will decide later about driving lights as we don't do a lot at night. The headlights were OK driving into Fitzroy Crossing Wed night but something better would be preferable for extended night time use.

Other than that it is as per the photo - ARB Bullbar, Safari Snorkel, TX3100 UHF (you can just make out the antenna in the photo) and now that I have a mark on my left knee I know it has an electric brake controller

Overall for a 9 year old vehicle it isn't in too bad a condition and with an engine and transmission as they are we thought it was too good a buy to pass up.

Sorry in advance for the questions I'll be asking...
    Cheers, Dale

    Looks good mate.

Like you, I was not a fan of the black interior. However, as I bought a demo D4, I didn't have a choice either.

Now though, I wouldn't have anything else in leather at least. I've seen how dirty some of the lighter colours can get, and how hard it is to clean them properly compared to the black leather.

Tombie will probably also tell you what driving lights would be the best to fit to your new purchase, especially since you already have the ideal mounting platform for them. I'd tend to agree with his recommendation.
    Cheers .........

So it was you that bought it, I had my eye on it as well

Even had the ad saved in my favourites 2006 Land Rover Discovery 3 HSE Auto 4x4 , but wanted to get up there to see it in person 1st.

Hope it's as good as the ad made it sound

Nice one! I have a 2006 HSE TDV6 too with about 245k. I am the second owner. The previous owner had to replace the transmission at 160k I think. Apart from diffs (which is a story in itself) the only things I have had to do is lower control arms, steering racks, and had the EPB adjusted. Oh, and the plastic piece that links the radiator and engine - dodged a real bullet there...

Somewhat bizarrely, when I was getting a wheel alignment some months ago, the dealer gave me a new air compressor as I had "missed a campaign ". I still cannot find any such campaign, and my mechanic has never heard of it, but I am not complaining!

I just have this annoying steering knock at low speeds now.

We managed to get a look at it in Broome at the end of June before we launched along the Gibb River Road. It just took us until the very end of August to get finances sorted (selling a house) before we could do it. He had dropped the price by 3 grand before we did though which made it (we thought) too good to pass up - especially once he told us about the transmission!

We had a weekend in Perth at the end of August (wife went for a conference) and had a couple in mind to look at there if this one sold. However they would have ended up costing us $10,000 more so we were pleased to get this one, given its history. It's in good nick and has obviously not been cared for fastidiously but it has been looked after though.

This one is actually the first Land Rover I've looked at before I've said yes to buying it.

PS - You could always put a request out for someone to have a look for you if it happens again. AULRO-ians are always a helpful lot.

Andy, The Permagrin happened when I sold the Troopcarrier and bought the Defender.

And it has continued through both Discovery's - although I do get your point (says he after only 1800 highway kms on the drive home).

The issue for us was not HSE or SE but 7 seats and the air suspension - and auto. Living in Darwin the considerations have changed from when we were in Arnhem Land and buying the D2 and Defender.

Good to hear you had a 'win' with the compressor. The diffs are not making any noise that I could hear but the compressor seems to be occasionally so I'll have to see what happens with that.

Occasionally is normal for the compressor. It's when it runs for ages that you need to be concerned. I found there was lots of different noises to get used to and I think knowing what is "normal" is useful for detecting issues early.

Someone recently posted hearing a change in the sequence of sounds during normal shutdown that preceded an issue with his turbo actuator (I think).

    Cheers,
