The rattling is driving me bonkers...

But I can't find it. Somewhere inside my cabin is a metallic rattling noise, what I can only describe as sounding like a washer / lose bolt jingling and jangling around. Buggered if i can locate it though. From the drivers seat it sounds like coming from the middle storage box. But I've had others drive for me while I crawl about everywhere inside trying to locate the sound. We've managed to narrow it down to the rear area, but with every seat combination deployed and all removable bits of luggage / equipment eliminated this jingling noise has me beaten.

So I'm throwing it out there now for wild card suggestions from you guys. It can only be heard inside, even when a door is slammed shut and most noticeable at town driving speeds as the car travels over road bumps.

That story reminds me of one of the early supercheap auto add where the bloke pulls the car apart only to find a couple of bolts in the ashtray...

Or the Volkswagen advert where it turned out that the girl asleep in the passenger seat had squeaky earrings.

In my car it turned out to be something loose in the parcel of tools stored with the jack. No problem once the damn OEM jack collapsed and so hit the rubbish skip.

Hi There,
For me the rear seat belt clip in the middle seat that dropped between the seats and was hitting the bracket under the seat. Couldn't find it for the life of me until I gave someone a lift and they had to sit in the back.

Years ago it was alleged that workers at the Rootes Group (Hillman, Humber, Singer, Sunbeam, Commer, Karrier, etc) factories would put nuts and bolts into the body rails during assembly to cause rattles to annoy management. I suspect it annoyed the customers more than management. Because of their location it would be impossible to remove them unless the chassis rails were cut open.

My kids have dropped coins down the vents beside the 3rd row seats.
The coins roll & rattle at times.
I don't know if the vents are in all Discos or just those with rear air, they run along under the rear most windows and apparently coins fit down them very well.

One of the third-row seats in mine is a bit loose when stowed, and rattles a bit. It is fine when upright. Also, I noticed the scissor jack has come loose a few times if not stowed properly with the rubber strap.

No help for your problem, but if we want anecdotes.

Back in the 1970's when the Leyland P76 was in production at Zetland there were episodes of industrial espionage where both Ford Homebush and GMH Pagewood would send spies to work on the p76 production line.

One of their favourite devices was to weld a large nut onto a length of welding wire and then weld the other end into a cavity before the cavity was closed by the next panel.

The customer and dealer would then go bonkers trying to find the clunking noise.

Mine was the seat belt clip on the rear drivers side , as the belt was not in its little holder at the top side of the seat the clip was touching and rattling on the plastic on the window surround . Took ages to work it out .
