Upgrade Brakes on 130 Puma

I have a 130 Puma on which I have mounted a Trayon slide-on camper. Braking on the 130 when the camper is not on is the usual 130 Defender capability but when the camper is on and we are loaded up for a trip the brakes are not what you would call efficient.

Does anyone have any suggestions for upgrading the brakes on the 130? I have spoken to a couple of mechanics that specialize in Defenders and they tell me to do any mods would require engineering certification. I have tried a softer
pad which improved it ever so slightly

I started looking at a twin diagram booster from the Disco, that'll at least help reduce leg pressure and hopefully get to a decent MC pressure faster on the Initial application.

A pad with a higher coefficient of friction would be nice and close to 750° max operating temp. I would think you'd want the mu getting close to or at .5 for much of its working temp range.
The ones I use in the Disco are no longer available, the company has gone out of business so I could only suggest EBC Yellow Stuff or similar.

DBA make a slotted front rotor for the Defender, that's where I would go first DBA PART FINDER – Performance brake disc rotors and brake pads | Disc Brakes Australia
I've had good results with their xtreme performance pads on my Falcon RTV ute with slotted t2 rotors but DBA don't do a pad for the Defender instead referring to a Wagner product.

Hey Chenz we have upgraded brakes on defenders such as 6 pot calipers rotors etc and really not much better.We have a customer with a 130 camper that would not pull
up,when we put it on the scales it was just over 4 ton.We adapted a hydro booster to it with braided brake lines and it now locks up on the tar with little effort.Dont even bother going down the double booster road as that is a waste of money as well.

That sounds like what I am looking for. Can you send me some details and I will follow up with my mechanic to get it done? Did it need engineering certification to do this modification?

I put some english brake pads in my 130 and then had trouble stopping. I had to replace these pads very quickly. I really prefer Repco brake pads and they have worked great in every car i have fitted them to. I had to remove some Bendix 4wd pads from my D3 as i couldnt stop. I put Repco pads into the D3 and the brakes are great.

I ended up putting geniune pads back into the 130 and these are working fine and give me adequate braking and are dependable.

Just returned from having the brake booster upgrade which was carried out by Glen and his professional team at Momentum 4 X 4 in Wauchope NSW. They did it all in a day and the transformation in the stopping power of my 130 is nothing short of phenomenal.

As a test - not that I wanted one so dramatic, on the way home coming back into Sydney, a driver went up the left lane only to discover a parked car and then proceeded to merge into my lane without looking. I managed to brake and avoid a serious accident. I am sure with the old brakes it would have been a totally different story.

I can highly recommend this conversion to anyone wanting more stopping power in their Defender.
