are Puma 110 tyres OK for Cape trip?

Hello again,

I have a 2008 Puma 110 wagon and i will be taking my Machine to Cape York in a few weeks. We are very excited as this will be our first time and I will be driving the best 4WD in the world.

But I have concern about the tyres. They seem to be made for road use not the dirt and corrugations of the Cape.

Should I look at getting some all terrain tyres or will these originals be OK?

Which tyres would be good for the cape trip?

I was told that most tyre manufacturers do not make A/T tyres to fit these rims as they are a light truck wheel. Is this true or am I being fibbed to for a sale?

If they are still fitting General Grabbers to the Puma Deefers, then they will be fine.

Any tyre in the correct size will go on those rims. Steer clear of tyre sellers who tell lies.

I'd keep my GG's on the Puma for the trip. So far I have found them a good solid tyre. The only reason I can think to swap would be for a mud terrain tyre.

You can get A/T's of all kinds in the 235/85R16.

The general grabbers are surprisingly capable if you get them at the right pressure for the conditions

They dont like wet clay or shale and are adequate in light mud providing you have a good base.

They are surprisingly good in sand, with about 15/16PSI in them.

I spent the day out with the LR club of SA in sand and sandhills yesterday in a bog standard 07 110. It went places that the locked and lifted guys with enormous tyres went without raising a sweat.

we took our 03 td5 to the cape with the standard GG's on and the performed superbly.Handled every situation and did not have one puncture.Id stick with them.

We are still running the gg's. They are fine. The only problem with them is they tend to chip quite a bit on dirt roads, but I wouldn't bother changing them for that reason.

Ours have been through the simpson, to WA and back via all sorts of dirt roads, and to the Gulf. I reckon they probably only have one more trip in them though

we went to kakadu via the Nhulunbuy litchfield nation park down through alice and down through williams road....

12,000k and a lot of corrogations some of them nasty! on general grabbers...we did get a flat. it was when we drove into darwin on the main high street picked up a piece of metal.
We tried to get another grabber as we think they are great and very tough tyres. they are a mud and snow tyre and we have had no problems in sand, or corrugations or any other lose surface. we got a toyo to replace the spare (couldn't get a grabber) tyre guy swore by them said they were a really tough tyre (they are 8ply) the GG are 10ply i think.

If it was my choice I would keep the grabbers ON

Everything in life seems to be a trade off of some kind or another. I too agree the General Grabbers are fine and will do the job. Very quiet on the road too. However, like Dullbird had discovered, many places do not keep these suckers in stock, and it could take them a while to get them in. My one criticism of them is that I found the 85 profile on them a "little floaty" on road. I decided on trading them in for BFG Mud Terrain KM2. Although they are a little noisier on road, I find the side walls make it have a "less floaty" ride as they are 75 profile (265/75/16). Or in other words, slightly wider and slightly shorter in profile. I am happy with the change and I know they will be awesome off road when I get the chance in a couple of weeks. I had previously had BFG All Terrains and on road, I already prefer the Muddies.
