So what is your question?...
Ok I picked up a cheepie van to run around in rather than use the county and it gave me time to do a bit of work on the county any way.
The problem is. All seemed well until the next day.
Puffing a bit of smoke on start up, ok guide seals not to much of a problem. But what has me a bit confused
It runs very well when wormed up even a little.
Some times it smokes on start up some times not
Some times smokes when cold and up put your boot into it
Always smokes in you use the choke even a little only bringing the idle up a 100rpm.
temperature gage never gets above 1\4 on the gage don’t know if this is normal or not but she worms up quickly so i assume the thermostat is still there.
Seems to smoke more often if the oil is full no smoke when oil is 1\2 full
You can see how im now not so sure its guides and seals. There is a little bit of tappet noise but not much and its constant though the revs and temps
So what is your question?...
What colour smoke and when?
Grey smoke is oil burning.
Black smoke is over fueling.
Funny I had a similar thing happen with an old Mazda 323 RWD that I had in Malaysia. I was stppped at lights and all of a sudden I had a smokescreen. Did it for a while then never again.
Here is my theories on why.
1 oil not draining from rocker cover area and running down guides.
2 PCV valve not closing and oil being pumped up and into the inlet manifold. I think 2 is more likely. Maybe replace the PCV valve and see if it makes a difference.

ahh now thats an idea
bing go
Started her up no smoke
gave her a few revs 1500 rpm chock on and the oil filled up to the filler, smoke everywhere, ( next door haven’t said hello for the last week)
Shut it down, popped the rocker cover, sludge every where, considering I changed the oil and filter a couple of days ago.
So question, is there a recommended engine flush rinse etc or should I drop the sump and do it all the hard way??
Sounds more like a broken ring
only does it cold
if you start it then rev it quickly it blows smoke
Goes away when warm
Old cleaning trick is to change the oil with the cheapest you can get. Think supermarket stuff, supposed to have lots of detergents in it.
Drive it hard for a couple of hundred km's and then change to your normal oil.
Down side of cleaning the sludge out of an old engine is that any leaks will now leak more than before.
