    Disco rear hub bearings

I've just brought a 1999 Discovery 1 and decided that due to a oil leak from the rear hub, I'd overhaul the assembly. But two things are now confusing me, should the bearings be packed with grease?-there seems to be two conflicting schools of thought on this, and secondly which way round should the hub seal lip face-outwards towards the disc like mine was (which would stop dirt coming from the outside, but not stop grease coming out from the inside)
I hope somebody could help please

Now is the time to convert them to oil-fed bearings for longer life.

You'll need a different seal - a double lipped one - RTC3511 and you'll need to removed the seal in the diff housing that seals on the axle shaft.

Thanks for the info-how about this just to make it more confusing. When I stripped the hub, the bearings had no sign of grease on them at all, and were perfect-that would suggest they were oil fed-but here's the rub there was a seal fitted for the axle shaft.

Even if you are running oil fed bearings Always prepack the bearings with grease prior t oinstalling them.

If there is an oil leak from the hub then there is most likely diff oil getting passed the oil seal at the end of the axle tube and into the hub, and it's leaking because you have a grease not oil seal in the hub.

Best bet is to remove the seal at the end of the axle tube, and fit an oil seal, RTC3511, to the hub.

Still pack the bearings with grease, and make sure that the seal surface on the stub axle is in good nick or it will leak.

Thanks one and all for the help, went into Perth today and have brought the RTC3511 seal, so tomorrow's job is to pull of the stub axle (again) and then discard the seal in the end.
I'll also pack the bearings with grease.
