While you are at the gearbox check that the oil pump is not stripped or has a broken shaft, which is possible if 90 has been put in at any time.
AFAIR( and it was 25 years ago) the front seal of the gearbox sits in an extension which bolts on. The oil pump is also under this extension.

So I take it that this can be checked without any dismantling of the gearbox except for this extension - as far as I know the gearbox has only ever had engine oil in it and it works fine - 1st gear synchros are getting a bit tired but that is about it. Tfr case leaks a bit at the rear seal but I can do that anytime.
