    Replacing Rear Main Oil Seal

Following on from this thread LT 95 Clutch Fork I need to remove my LT 95 gearbox from my early 3.5 V8, move it back a bit and fix some clutch stuff. Not dismantling anything from the engine or gearbox.

While the gearbox and engine are split I was thinking of replacing any oil seals that do not require any major dismantling. Is there anything like the engine rear main oil seal or front gearbox seals that can be replaced without major dismantling?

    Thanks

    Yes both.

While you are at the gearbox check that the oil pump is not stripped or has a broken shaft, which is possible if 90 has been put in at any time.

AFAIR( and it was 25 years ago) the front seal of the gearbox sits in an extension which bolts on. The oil pump is also under this extension.

I presume the early 3.5 wouldn't be much different to the later 3.9 as far as rear engine mail seal.
The rear crank shaft seal requires the sump to be dropped for correct fitment so you can remove the bearing carrier, to replace the "T" Seals, then slide the main seal in and apply the RTV. If you want to take a short cut, then just pull the main seal out and refit the new one without taking the sump off. But you risk it leaking from the "T" Seals which get brittle with age.
If you have access ands can spare the extra time, do it properly

So I take it that this can be checked without any dismantling of the gearbox except for this extension - as far as I know the gearbox has only ever had engine oil in it and it works fine - 1st gear synchros are getting a bit tired but that is about it. Tfr case leaks a bit at the rear seal but I can do that anytime.

    Thanks
