you can use an EFI fuel pump if you set it up with a return line pressure regulator. that said...

unless its for a series I any of the low volume facet pumps will work without a pressure regulator. The same one that was running one of my long offloaded series rovers is now running the 3.5 in the black thing.

Carry a length of suitably adapeted hose to create a "closed circuit" on the mech pump as well as the appropriate fittings to get the electric pump connected up. Some people suggest (and I back the theory) that re-routing the pickup line and installing a cheap inline filter under the inspection panel under the center seat allows for a quick and easy change and electrical hookup by running the power feed cable out the boot for the handbrake to the light sockets on the dash. The facet pumps usually have a flange on them that mounts quite nicely on the top inspection plate on top of the Tcase.

yep, then dicount the bit about the center seat position then.

from memory the easiest place to install the pump as a temporary measureis down near the fuel water seperator unit on the chassis rail, Cut the existing line and then splice it with a straight through joiner and a pair of hose clamps in advance, for an emergancy feed I usually just put a female electrical connector onto the aux or tail light pin on the trailer socket or wire it into the connector if theres a trailer fitted.

The lift pump on the TDI pushes somehting like 10-12psi and thats bang on the money for a facet pump.

that one would do the job very nicely.

( I cant find my online parts list for facet pumps, when I get back from lunch I'll try to get you the most suitable part number)

correct, fozzys been running that way for the last 50 odd thousand K's. manual fuel pump in place on the engine because Ive been meaning to repair it but if your going to bypass the mech pump permanantly make up a blanking plate with a stud hanging off of it to mount the electric pump and remove the mechanical pump completely.

I like to install a couple of relays to drive it, the first connects power to the fuel pump and the cut off solenoid being switched on by the original cut off solenoid wiring and the second turns off the main power feed to the first relay in the event of the low oil pressure light circuit doing its thing.

cool more money saving for me then i was thinking of using a gas safety switch which has a low oil cut off and a 30 second prime feature along with roll-over shut off

theres a hand full of ways of setting it up.

the most basic way means cranking it on the starter till oil pressure gets up before it will start and from there theres more and more complicated setups to do it.

the simplest I've seen was just a capacitor hooked up to the low pressure switch and the relay initial turn on has the light come on, it fades after a few seconds (usually about the amount of time the glow plugs run for) and then you're good to start. a low oil condition sees the light come on, the engine stop and then the light fades out.

you can also hook it up to some of the glow plug timers a turbo timer or almost any 12v electronic delay unit.

Ive also seen a magnetic tilt switch used for a rollover stop switch before today., just got to be carefull if you jump it hard enough.
