    I removed, tested and refitted my thermostat on Sunday. A fiddly job, even with the top half of the engine missing.

    What really annoyed me was finding this stamped on the thermostat ...



    How could you get it wrong?? (Illiterate mechanic??)

    Looking at what the pump had to draw coolant through, I was lucky the head wasn't damaged in any way.



    That's a pressure relief valve that is pushed open during normal operation while the thermostat is closed. With coolant flow in the opposite direction it was never going to allow enough flow.

    Ahh well ... fixed now ... my wallet that is!

    I heard one more scenario to me today. Incorrectly attaching the oil cooler and fuel cooler hoses to the radiator [switching where they connect below the radiator outlet] will increase temps by about 7 degrees. Presents similar symptoms to a incorrectly connected thermostat.
