    Molybond 2.5 in R380

    Hi all.
I am useing Valvoline Duragear 75w-85 manual transmission oil in my R380 box. Molybond 2.5 oil additive has been recommended to me from several tranny experts but it is not compatible with ester based synthetic oils. The duragear is a "synthetic blend" and on searching I cannot find whether it has an ester base. Does anyone know?

    May i ask

why would you want to add a additive to the gearbox???

Are you having problems with the synchros??

other wise there should be no need.

I used to work at, and for a period own a gearbox repair shop for around 18 years. During this time we tried and tested Molybond additive.

We found that after a lot of miles the gears were in much better nick than equivalent mileage cars that had no Moly. We used to swear by it.

Harbspan.G'day ,in regard to using Molybond would not it use as I've experienced serious problems with its application due to reaction of the di sulphide in the molybond.I think modern lubricants more than do the job,try Googling Castrol-now BP-and read the syntrans screed. They claim ,in Europe,Volvo heavy vehicles change transmission oils at 400,000ks.I've used syntrans75-85 for years and swear by it. Hope this is of some use to you,by the way all the oil companies have a technical department give them a ring, over the years,I've got good info.from them. Best of luck Lochie

ima syntrans man, iv tryed D3 for about 2000km and dident like the idea of having auto in a man when there are oils made of mans, so flushed it heaps and put syn back in, i change mine every 20k and allways come out very clean and no bronze/ brass colour to it at all, so very happy,

i probly could let the oil go for a few more ks but im a preventative maintenance guy

not saying the stuff works,, but the way i see it is if you have to put a additive in your covering up a problem, Gboxs are designed with no additives??

Cant comment on the specific application but MoS2 is definitely not snake oil - it has well proven benefits in many applications, particularly under boundary lubrication conditions.
