    Horrendous fuel consumption

Just reading through the VKS network mag, and came across the story of the marvellous walk in aid of the Heart foundation across the Madigan line by two ladies, Gill Plastow and Donna Kelly 23rd Sept '09.
In the report, it stated the 4.2 diesel and 3l diesel patrols both returned 28l/100km, and the 100 series cruiser, presumambly also a diesel returned 32.8l/100km

This surely makes these sorts of vehicles on the edge of tennable, for remote travel having to carry huge weights in fuel !!!

Sure the track IS very difficult, and September would see it reasonably soft but those numbers are extremely high. Can anyone here divulge their diesel figures for the Madigan line, Td5 and/ or Tdi? I would be interested to see the comparison.

These vehicles would be loaded a fair bit too as support crew and the like, but I'd like to think my RR 4BD1 would use a whole lot less than that, even fully loaded

    Madigan Line - July 2007
    14.7 l/100k from a Td5 Defender.
    Worst consumption in the party of seven Landys (1 x 300Tdi and 6 x Td5 Defender 110 & 130's and Discos) was around 17 l/100k.
Plenty of slow running - max speed of 11.7km/hr one day and only 32km covered. The Madigan is not a fast track.

Correct Kyle, They say that most of the time was spent in 2nd or 3rd low ratio, even so, that is way over the top consumption Idle can only really account for a little with a diesel engine I reckon.

Spoke to a friend of mine that did the Simpson (Not Madigan)with a 3l Auto GU patrol and he was in a D2 manual with Td5 and chipped, he used roughly half the fuel of the diesel GU

My father spent a lot of time working on Fraser island in the 70's,& i can still remember him complaining about the amount of fuel the 6cyl used compared to the 4.
And the extra power from the 6 wasn't very noticeable compared to the 4.It often had a trailer on it as well, which didn't help.

Fraser was a beautiful place in those days, but if you got stuck,or had a problem you were all on your own.
Those fun days are gone for ever

    Umm,the worst i got out of my '97 SS was 30l/100 K

FWIW...there's a report in ExploreOz of a toy Troopie using 78L/100km due to soft sand conditions...spent a lot of time in low range...other diesels reported 15-24l/100km for the same trip...
