    Windscreen replacement

I'm organising to get me windscreen replaced on my Disco 1 1996 after hail damage.
The insurance says get it done and pay and send the bill for reimbursement.
I rang a windscreen company, quoted me $185 for a new screen fitted.
Asked if they replace the rubber finishing trims and they said they would have to get a quote from Land rover.
Since these trims had be reused before, they fitted terribly.
I have sourced the genuine trims myself.
Am I in my rights to insist on the rubber trims being replaced and paid for by insurance as part of a windscreen claim. The screen company said they would fit them. I have hear that they must be replaced as course, is that true?

That's the way it has worked with my insurance. If fitting a new windscreen and the rubber seals are a normal part of the job then they are included as a matter of course.

Not about the rubber, but does the old screen have inbuilt UV filtration?

I had the windscreen of my '84 RRC replaced some years ago and discovered the new screen allowed much more heat through. I've just had the screen of my D2 replaced and insisted on having an equivalent screen fitted, ie one with UV filtration. The insurance co had no knowledge of such screens but accepted my request/demand and although the windscreen shop declared that all screens are made in the same factory and hence all the same, at my insistance a UV version was found and eventually fitted. If one had not been available the insurance co would have had to fit a genuine one because I insisted on an equivalent screen. The windscreen shop thought my vehicle must have been special because they fitted an ordinary screen to another D2 the previous week yet the owner had said nothing.

In my experience the rubber is not covered by the insurance company for windscreen replacement and will therefore come out of you own pocket

It is is a bonded screen (glass bonded direct to the screen surround and not in a rubber surround). The 4 rubber cover trims that sit over the joint are essential and have to be covered by insurance. Unfortunately they are the same cost of screen only and reuse is next to impossible.

Yes it is a bonded screen.
As far as reusing the old they have been reused before and appearance wise they have crinkles and bubbles where some sort of hard adhesive was used to glue them in.
I'm sure if they rip when taking the old screen out they would have to be covered by insurance.

You could always get a quote using a genuine Land Rover Windscreen which is of far superior quality, get your ounce of satisfaction.

I am uncertain about the Series1 but for the Series2 Disco I can buy an after market Chinese screen for a bit over $100, not fitted and a genuine one from the dealer is $740 ( I had a quote last week).

If you take your car to a repairer for a hail quote, be it for the windscreen, you would be up for the any insurance excess, which is usually waived for windscreen replacement.

You are probably in a no win situation

I got a quote a for my 96V8 a couple of weeks prior to xmas (Obriens I think),,,two things that came from from that are,,,

They said they had to do the rubbers,,,a reused old one may not seal for long,,,,if at all,,
And they also said there was supposed to be a difference betwen Pet/Des models,,,,, --- this was a question thats in their "get a phone quote" questionaire,,, --- I thought about this later, and wondered if they used a slightly different glass structure or something ,,, maybe vibration related,, , (not that deisels rattle anyway ),,but seriously, has anyone else been asked this question, can someone enlighten me on this please?
The price i got was about $550 from memory.. funnily enough,, the price was the same for both anyway,,

I might give O'briens a call, and get a quote, and see what they say.
The quote of $185 fitted was from national Windscreens, probably Chinese glass???? I'm up for $550 excess for the car repair anyway, the Windscreen is covered in the policy for hail damage.

The screen is bonded to the body on update Disco1s so the finisher rubbers have no affect on water sealing.

Early diesel Discos had a heated screen which might be why they asked the Q. By 1996 both models had the same screen though which is why the $$ is the same.
