    Disco TDI300 hard starting when warm

    Hi all.
    Just changed Disco's from V8 to TDI300 s1 and the old girl is a bit hard starting when warm. Motor ticks over easy. Always wait for Glow plug light top go out before turning the key. ????
    Could it be Glow plugs. If so why only when warm.

    No need to wait for the glow plugs as they arent really required here, check all the filters and the sedimenter, i cant think of anything except possibly the injector pump solenoid power lead ?

    if it happens a lot when the car has been on a good run but happens intermittently then it could be the starter on the way out...this is what happened to mine.

    there is a way of testing this if the car doesn't start but I can remember it requires putting a wire to the starter solenoid or something...but I'm sure someone will chime in

    Check the earthing...

    The starter gets its earth through the casing, which in turn gets it from the block, etc... All it takes is a thin smear of oil/grease and the electrical connection is knackered.

    The easy way of testing is to simply use a jump lead. When you get the problem next, stick the jump lead onto one of the starter/bell housing bolts and the battery -ve and see what happens.

    Some things to try:

    * Check spade connector onto starter solenoid. Get's dirty from oily turbo hose above
    * Check voltage at starter solenoid. Mine was only 9V, enough to click but not actually engage fully
    * Check earth straps on chassis, gearbox and battery
    * Check ignition switch as they can fail

    Its a strange one as a diesel should start just by touching the key almost.

    As for not waiting for glow plugs, I have it from a pretty good source that when cold always wait for plugs, they heat up and more diesel is burnt and not just washed down the bore.

    When or once warm, it fine just to start and not wait for glow plug to warm up.

    I did a search on the net and many posts have argued similar but the people in the know like diesel tuners, engine builders and mechanical engineers will probably confirm to let the plugs warm and help the fuel to burn on start up thus reducing pluming and unburnt fuel washing down bore and possibly shortening life and or glazing.

    Have a search on Google, i know some is jsut banter on there but pick out the knowledgeable stuff and it will be as clear as mud.
