just got a series diesel motor for $10 from the tip every thing on it except sump pan, i was wondering if the diesel motors were the same specs for all the series models . also there was a front rover diff there but not free wheeling(no hub lock) did some series not have free wheeling hubs(front diff, drum brakes, screw in the top of the hub flange like a rear diff, any info would be much appreciated.

    G'day Ryno,
All the Aus series diesels until the stage 1 were the same spec from factory, and shares a couple of major parts with the petrol 2.25, including the sump pan. Also, no Land Rovers had freewheel hubs ex-factory.
    $10 is a bloody good price for a 2.25D!

There were actually a bunch of minor changes between 1961 and 1985ish (the years the 2.25D were available).

There were minor changes to the injection pump and pump timing, and changes to the crank (I believe later cranks had improvements to the forging process). Also, Series 3 models got a butterfly valve in the intake to provide vacuum for brakes. From 1978/9-on they needed to comply with more stringent emissions regs. Somewhere along the line they also got a 1" thick alloy baffle between the block and sump to reduce engine noise.

However, that said, most/all parts are interchangeable (with the exception of 5 main bearing engines - of which very few came to OZ).

CAV DPA injector pumps were used on all 2.25 engines, and a huge range of other engines, up until the early-mid 90's. Any diesel shop can rebuild your pump or injectors and all parts are available.

As far as I am aware, all parts are still available. There are LOTS of 2.25Ds still in use in the UK.

EDIT - what is the engine number? You can tell the year from that.

    Ben.

lucky find, wasnt saying that when me and the tip man had to haul it into the back of the cruiser, made of good stuff. But i recon it is been sitting in the grass for a while but old oil still driping out of the sump screen and a little old diesel fuel in filter lines although smells like parrifin. As soon as i seen it i wasent gonna leave it, would have left the cruiser and dragged it home if i had to.

Agree with you there, even a rusty old Rover engine block is more valuable than a land cruiser
