    Overdrive Problem

    Hey All,

having a problem with my Toro Overdrive in my IIA. I rebuilt the unit about 2 years ago and ever since it has been jumping out of "gear" after about 10 mins of being engaged - very annoying. I drive the landy on a 100km round trip for work each day and the highway leg is very annoying without the OD (its running a 186).

It started it doing this straight away, but minute adjustments to the position of the selector shaft seemed to make it "better" (less bad)... Since then I have not been able to get it any better, despite repeated attempts at this adjustment.

I've checked all the other external possibilities such as the selector lever touching a panel, etc... but there is no obvious reason why it is doing this.

Anyone had a similar problem? Any overdrive gurus out there to diagnose this bloody problem?

    Cheers,

    Adam

Possible problems which could cause this:-

    1. Incorrectly assembled synchromesh unit
    2. Bent selector fork or worn pads on the ends, or loose or incorrectly adjusted on the selector shaft.
    3. Selector detent spring weak, broken or missing.

with the top off the overdrive select overdrive and ensure that the selector fork is positively located by the detent ball and that in this position the dog is fully engaged. If it is not, it may be due to maladjustment, or excessive wear on the pads on the fork, or something stopping it engaging, usually a stray bit of synchromesh spring. Also note that any end play on the mainshaft will lead to the dog not fully engaging, and you should ensure there is no endplay. Sloppy bearings may also lead to disengagement.

I agree , too much end float or worn dogs and teeth on the internals.
if the dogs and teeth are worn , no amount of adjustment to the detent of selector will stop it jumping out.

Thanks guys - the endfloat is good and the dog is in good condition, this was all done when I rebuilt the unit. I'll ge the top off and see what's what - a synchromesh spring sounds possible as I had plenty of trouble getting those back in...

    Cheers,

    Adam
