You should be able to mate the ZF auto and LT230 transfer case to the engine. There would possibly be some custom mounts and propshafts required.
Hi guys
I did ask before but no one seemed to answer if they had done it, or known anyone to do it...
Can any autos be fitted to the original Stage One v8 carby 109 utes?
if so what is needed, flywheels, etc.. and how did it go?
Thanks in advance
Chad

You could probably pickup a TF727 pretty cheap.

I connected a ZF auto to a EFI manual Rangie (and in process of doing the same to a Stage One body on a Rangie Chassis).
I had never worked with Autos before but got most of info I needed by following the service manual for the rangie/disco re removing an auto.
When you source your ZF and lt230 (get it from a rangie or disco being wrecked) make sure you get
(1) the flexi plate/fly wheel for the auto - you will throw your manual one away. You will need to remove the brass bush inside the crank shaft where the spindle from the manual box goes in - otherwise auto torque converter will not mate up properly to the engine
(PS doing main seal and or welsh plus in the rear of the motor is a smart move while box is out - cheap parts - bugger of a job if have to do later - ours were leaking so did them - delayed the job as did not have the parts on hand and welsh plugs cost nothing!). Use correct torque setting fro bolds - need torque wrench also hexkey socket set and lock tight.
(2) Oil Cooler lines and oil cooler for the ZF - your issue will be where to mount the cooler in the stage one - oil lines are low pressure so can cut and buy generic hose from ENZED or Pirtec (any hydraulic place) - note you will prob not need to run the cooler via the radiator to the cooler (as on Discos) as not that cold here unless you live in a real cold part of the country - we don't in QLd. So our oil lines run from auto to cooler and back only
(3) Get the auto cooler - I call it the hedgehog looking tube in front of the radiator/air con fans. The tubes into these are a non standard fitting so will need them - you can cut the bends you don't need and clamp on new hose but keep the fitting that goes into the hedgehog as not a standard size.
(4) Get all the interior fitting for Auto control (T bar etc)and for the lt230 transfercase
(5) Get the chassis mounts - you may need new holes in chassis to bolt these up - get new nylock nuts if not new bolts for this - if you need to drill new holes then you will need to put in crush tubes - see chassis guy if not happy with this
(6) Wiring - you will need to look at a carby and auto Stage one and find where the kick down cable from the auto box NORMALLY connects to the throttle body and get whatever fitting needed - on my 89 efi rangie manual they did not put a tiny connection that needed for an auto so had to source one from a wreck - difficult as most engines sold with this part - not the auto box. A member on here came to my aid with this tiny part!
(7) Wiring - my ZF/transfer case (from a 94 disco) has wires for diff lock engaged, oil Temp (for transfer), auto cut out (park ignition only) and reverse light. Need to mate all this into your wiring loom - either use auto elect or spend some time with tester and wiring diagram - i did. I wired the diff Lock and temp to little button lights on the dash and the ignition block (which is an earth path - actually form memory all the connections are earth paths) via the ignition earth.
(8) You will need to modify your transmission tunnel to house the auto t bar and low range selector.
(9) Modify prop shafts as needed
(10) Connect up handbrake - not sure if you can mate a Stage One hand brake leaver to a disco/rangie lt230 brake drum. If you get a cable one prob can but again get all the hand brake bits from handle to drum if thinking of going this way
(11) Post pictures of every stage (sorry I did not but do have some)
Lot of work but not overly technical - off road driving - Fantastic for uphill and crawling over objects. Much easier drive. We have reduction gears in the transfer case so auto down hill not too bad either - but not same as putting in first and letting the engine do the work.
Hope that helps

Thanks alot mate...
really appreciate it, I had to re-read a few times,
Like you posted, alot of fidly stuff.
I am thinking of maybe purchasing a complete discovery, then I can just take what I want...
I have seen a few fairly cheap, NO REGO etc.. but exactly what I need.
It all the little stuff like you said...
Do they run a Cable for the gear selector?
Thanks again Chad
hey what Auto do these run??
Would this suit?
Thanks Chad

No Prob - wish I had known what I know now.
Use this site to search and ask qu - also google as sometimes you can find picture tutorials and buy a manual (can get on ebay posted to you for 10-15$ - invaluable)
I had bought a 94 disco for $1k (rust in body but good motor and auto) simply for the motor to put in my disco that had slipped a liner.
I was going to sell the transfer case and auto to get my $ back. BUT.... the manual in my 89 Rangie ute blew up after 1 week of ownership so decided to put auto and lt230 into the rangie - best decision ever
Fiddly but not impossible - the stumbling block was the kick down connection of the kickdown cable from the auto box. Initially this was not connected - makes it hard to drive.
As I say find either a diagram or an actual stage one that has an auto and look at the connection (if there is such a thing). OR you will need to make a bracket to connect to the throttle to pull the kick down cable for the auto.
Yes the auto is cable operated so you can put the leaver where you want - see pic below of my ZF and lt230 before installed - you can see that the transfer leaver is fixed to the box but the auto leaver is on a cable
This should be a straight bolt on job to your engine - not 100% sure about exhaust routing and issues for a stage one.
Hope that helps
