Whiney TD5 on boost? Turbo already replaced

    Hi,
Am after a bit of help with a whine in my Discovery.

Its a 01 TD5 Auto, 108,000ks. Issue is that at 2500revs it begins to have a whine/whistle which seems to come from the passengers side. I had the mechanic have a look when I took it for a warrant last month. He diagnosed a stuffed turbo and wanted 4.5k NZD for a brand new replacement. I got one in from the UK myself for a bit over a grand and have bolted it on myself today.

Took it for a spin and while it goes much better still have the same whining issue. Needless to say not going back to the mechanic and not happy with them but I still need a diagnosis.

    Any ideas?

Sounds like you have a leak somewhere on the pressure side of the turbo.

    Cheers,

I am not that mechanical minded but can a leaky intercooler hose cause this?? I have heard that when the intercooler pipe leaks, it whistles and you lose power and fuel econ. As I said though I not good with the mechanical stuff, it just what I been told in the past. Hope I am on the mark!

This seems like the winner, went and had a look back in the garage. Cylinder No 5 has carbon built up round the manifold, started the motor and could feel air escaping from there at idle. Nothing from the rest of the cylinders. Will see how it goes replacing this.

Don't feel like your the only one ripped off,if I had a dollar for every time an ''expert'' gave a $$$$ repair quote for a simple or not needed repair.I'll give you a free tip, don't ever get a ''14 point safety check for $40 or a fixed price $120 service'',trust me they are aren't cheap for nothing. Had a look through some threads on the exhaust mannifold... There are no broken studs on mine. It seems the course of action is to pull the mannifold, check it for warping, possibly cut out the 'webbing' and back on with a new gasket.
Re the turbo, I guess at least I didn't spend $4.5 k on one.
