    auto oil change,TDi

Hello, can you please advise me about whether it is practical to change oil in my auto transmission myself or should I pay to have it done. I do all my own servicing but I believe the auto trans. is a bit more complicated. I appreciate any input.

It is a pretty easy do-it-yourself type of job.

I can't recall if a crossmember has to come off for access though.

Drain oil, drop pan, replace filter, refit pan with new gasket, refill oil (4 litres Dexron III).

    Shouldn't take too long.

    Hi there,

It is simple enough to do yourself if you have the time. If you have a v8 with auto it would be easier to take cross member out first.

The only thing you need to buy is torque bit set to undo the filter inside.

so if you the time anything can be done.

    see ya

If you can do an engine oil & filter change, you can do your auto too.
Cleanliness is the key though but otherwise, there's nothing hard about the job.

I do mine every 40000km or so but if you do a lot of towing I would probably do it more often.

    Auto Oil Change

I'll agree to the above, you do need a Torx bit (no.28 I think) to get the filter off, and there is 1 bolt on the sump that is tricky to get to but it's do-able. I buy filters from Paddocks in the UK, They are VERY expensive here in NZ.

Some more help please, to get to the corner bolt do you have to remove the mounting bracket? and doesn't this affect the kickdown setting.also the book says about 9 litres not 4 litres, does the other 5 remain in the box? How can you flush it out?

Yes, you have to remove the mounting bracket to get the corner bolt out. From memory its the selector cable thats attached to that bracket, not the kickdown cable. Just leave it in park and dont move the selector arm on the box or in the cabin and you wont have a problem.

The remainder of the oil stays in the box and torque converter. If the oil is quite reasonable (ie not burned/dark) then you can just change the filter, refill, and run it for say 500km, then drain and refill. That will get almost of the oil replaced with new.
If the current oil is horrible then maybe its better to take it to an auto trans place that has the ability to flush it properly.
