Sorry, should have been more specific. The nuts and grease go on the part of the thread that you don't want gal on.

Ahh, OK. Have you tried this yourself though? Caustic is very good at dissolving grease, so I would imagine there wouldn't be much grease left after the caustic bath. And I would have to clean the (excess) zinc from 9 wheel nuts afterwards.

I didn't have a holder that wouldn't foul the u-bolt and the other bits, so came up with this:

I have hex. die holders in 1" & 1 1/2" that you can put a wrench or a socket on.

I have always just hit the threads with propane, got the gal hot to melt and then scrubbed it off with a wire brush. There will still be a fine layer of gal on the bolt but no more or less than if you re-die the thread.

Bought some large threaded rods once from a demolition place / junkyard that had been dipped with nuts on one end of the thread. The nuts came off easily with the rod in a vice and the thread underneath was good.

You could be slack and leave the nuts in some spirits of salt for a little while, it eats zinc.

Go to a good engineering supplier and ask for a thread file, used carefully it will clean up your gal prob and also tidy up most damaged threads.

first check that the pitch(es) you require are on the file. You may have to buy two or more. Then ask the price. For a good brand you will need to have a double brandy after getting a quote.

i don't stock thread files for the very good reason that I can not buy and resell them for a price any sane person would pay.
