    95RR 4.6 HSE water pump

    Greetings,
Looks like the water pump on my 95RR 4.6 HSE just gave in (at 177,000kms).

While driving-the belt could be heard slipping, the pwr str was inoperative and then the alt fail warning came up. A look under the hood revealed a major steam leak from down in the dark behing the fan.

Any coolant added just leaked straight out and closer inspection when cooled, revealed the w/pump pulley out of alignment.

I might normally change this myself but I/ve got cold feet because there seems to be some oil in the steam/water that came out under pressure. It was also on the underside of the removeable fan cowling.

My question is-can there be any block damage or other reason why oil might be mixed in with the water?

    Cheers,
    PH

    Is this a troll????
While a cursory seach of the site would probably find hundreds of references to blown head gaskets , it may be just that you had some oil leaking out of the valley and the water mixed with it as it went past.

You probably will not know until you fit a new pump and start er up.

    Greetings Philip,
Don't know what a troll is, but the water pump pulley is seized and the shaft seems busted & off centre with the fan (& pulley) noticeably about 10 degrees off line from the belt and other pulleys. Any coolant added just pours out from behind the pulley so I'm guessing the water pump housing or bearing just let go. I think I'm lucky it didn't go big time & take out the fan and radiator too.
But can the water pump shaft bust into the block or oil galleries in that area?
That's why I'm reluctant to start on it myself. If its just the pump I should be able to change it.
BTW the engine still starts and runs with the fan belt skidding over the seized water pump pulley, the jolly temp gauge didn't move from normal, but there is no froth, bubbles or cream cheese on the oil dip stick.
    Cheers,
    PH (the RRtragic)

    PH,

shouldn't be a big issue as long as severe overheating didn't occur. It is an easy job actually, just take your time.

SHOULD be a tutorial here somewhere, search function is your friend!

One suggestion - do not buy a cheap replacement. Get genuine or something like Quinton Hazell.

A lot of the spares we are seeing seem to come out of Asia and are of poor quality.
