Im about to Head off to Broken Hill for the outback challenge and was going over my Td5 Defender ,
On taking the air filter out to check it for the trip i noticed black oily film on the snorkle side of the filter pre engine side
The last time i changed the filter only 3 thousand ks i noticed the same , i put it down to a one off
Now my question is there a oil ventalation pre air filter from the engine and if so where or what is causing this
Td5 is well serviced and has 130 ks
The only hose that I know that goes into the air intake on the snorkle side of the filter that could contain oil/contanimates would be the little air tube from the EGR system.
It vents into the filter box.
Never heard of it being able to let in enought contaminate to mark the filter?

Some people pipe their diff/gearbox breathers into the snorkel to keep them out of water? Is that the case? Otherwise I agree sounds a bit peculiar
