    Tdi gurgling/rumbling sound

At idle I've got a rumbling noise and I can't track it down to anything.

Car drives well although fairly sluggish, no overheating but I have noticed sometimes a fair bit of smoke at idle, looks blue and combined with the rumbling noise I was thinking maybe turbocharger.

It also sounds exactly like [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNzqhIrXpqo"]YouTube- Nissan navara D22 big end bearing?[/nomedia] (although much more subtle) at 2500 rpm under load. I thought it might have been an injector problem but combined with the rumbling at idle I'm a little concerned

The other concerning symptom is a water gurgling noise when I shut the engine off parked in a nose up attitude. The coolant level is very slowly dropping although I'm not sure where it is going. I know this usually points to headgasket but there's no excess pressure in the coolant system.

    Any ideas?

rumbling: ?? bearings on belt idler tensioner(s), a/c bearing... perhaps

(not too diffficult to identify and fix)

losing coolant: much more of a concern if you can't see where it's coming out (I mean if it's a hose, pump, heater or radiator leak it should be noticeable)

checking the head gasket is an obvious step

It isn't anything on the ancillary drive as I've replaced the PS pump, water pump, tensioner and idlers recently.

when I had gurgling it was head gasket....

I never lost much water either but then the gasket was only just going I dont think it was a full blow.

I also had a lot of smoke not just on idle and smoke was light grey.

Car drove normal and wasn't sluggish either and also started very well.

I did towards the end start to get some pressurising of the collant system but I didn't at first.

I would be checking the head to be honest

I checked out my turbo today, it is perfect. There is not any radial or axial play and it rotates freely.

Even though my car is a 1997 model the head gasket isn't the MLS type. I thought I'd had head work done on this engine before but on checking receipts the head was only "pulled down" to cure an oil leak at a service quite a while back. By pulled down the mechanic means re-tensioned

Reckon I'll do this one myself.

What is the MLS type of head gasket and why is that an issue? I also have a 97 disco.

Drove home tonight in a spirited manner to get the boost happening, pulled into the drive and popped the bonnet to squeeze the hoses before shutting the engine down.

Top hose hard as a bullet.

Better get onto whilst it's still only a gasket change.
