    Oh no.. the gremlins strike the td5!

    I backed out of the shed this morning and the engine hesitated, and flashed the engine light at me (oh no). So I drove to the bakery (couple k's) all good. Drove to the park (couple k's) and it flashed the engine light and hesitated twice.

    I took the kids for a bike ride and when we got back it wouldn't start. Any amount of cranking - no go. I disconnected the battery and left it for a couple of minutes and reconnected the battery and away she went.

    I ran into an army mechanic who was wondering what all the commotion was about and he said they love the td5's (done 500k and only problem has been oil in the loom). He said the loom will be what it is.

    I quickly drove home and checked the plug at the engine and at the ECU and both are dry - not a hint of oil.

    I'll plug the nanocom in a little later and see if there are any codes.

    Any ideas? Crank position sensor?

    Well I hooked up the nanocom and there were a few fault codes but nothing sinister or obviously sus.

    I looked through the manual and can't see any reference to a specific fault code for the CPS. The only thing I could see that could be related was "15-2 High speed cranck (logged)".

    Also, my apologies as this probably should have been in the electrics forum.

    check your earths and the startermotor power cable.

    I checked the main earth from the back of the gearbox to the battery. I've just cleaned up... I'll look at the startermotor power cable tomorrow.

    The primary battery has just had a catastrophic failure (I think). I didn't really do anything too bad to it today. It started the thing perfectly, and now 10v with nothing running.

    Is it possible that as it failed something funny happened with it that could have caused this erratic behaviour?

    Sounds like a dropped cell in the battery...

    Noisy crank is often bad battery...

    Yep, I think so too now. The fact that the battery failed the same day has me thinking. I did notice that the gages blacked out momentarily during one of the incidents of the problem. I reckon it was internally shorting or something.

    I checked my receipts and the battery was over 2.5yo anyway. I went and bought an AGM battery today so we'll see how that goes. The battery well was full of gunk so I'll clean all that up and get back on whether it has fixed it.

    Phew... it would appear that the problem was only a failing battery.

    I've been using another battery and it's all running perfectly
