    Td5 Head machining/Skimming

Gday everyone, i was just wondering if it is possible to machine a Td5 head, if removed due to a head gasket failure ? As i have herd some people say you can and some people say you cant due to a surface finish on the head.
Who has done it ? and was it successful
    Cheers Adrian

I found a place by accident in a hot rod mag that specailises in recoing alloy heads, they can reharden alloy heads after machining but I lost the web page when my shirt went through the wash.I'll do a search and see if I can find it.They also nitride cranks, harden valves etc, pretty much any engine part you can think of they will heat treat. I asked a similar question a few months back.
    Td5 Head Work

In short, the answer is yes provided the head hasn't been subjected to excessive overheat and it doesn't need too much taken off. As far as I can tell, there is no surface hardening treatment done to the Td5 head. My engineer tested the harness of the surface to other parts of the head and found there was no difference at all.

    I've had mine done also.
No problems to date but havn't done big mileage(Km's) since either.
When my was done the shop redid my valve to face hights also, measured prior to machining and rececsed to original hight/depth.
Only 8 thou removed and couldn't find the spec for the valves(hence the measuring), and fitted the thickest head gasget too.
    Cheers, Kyle

LR say not to machine head and replace if warped over 0.004". This is because the head surface has a coating on it which will be removed if machined. You aren't to use metal scrappers on head surface as this will damage coating.
But I have seen heaps of heads machined with no problems.

I looked this up a long time ago.
AFAIR the heads are "hard anodised" as were the old VM heads.

I googled hard anodising and found a couple , one in Melbourne.

As I do not have a TD5 I didn't follow it any further but I am sure LR did the anodising for a reason.
Whether it is a a "make or break" or gives a much longer service life I have no idea.
