    How does it work: Reverse sensor on manual gearbox

    Presumably there is some sort of switch on the gearbox - where is it ? What does it look like ? How does it work ?

    I was wondering whether a series of them could be adapted to show, for example, whether a gearbox were in 1st or 2nd etc ?
    It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

    It is a simple spring loaded plunger switch. Usually works off the selectors somewhere, although inside the box (switch screws into the casing).

    I am sure it would be possible to set up a series of micro switches on the gearstick to tell you what gear you are in, but the question has to be why?

    And the answer has to be "why not!"

    I'm sick to death of mistaking what gear I'm in when in low range (Defender gear boxes are, how shall we say... sloppy) and thought a series of lights showing what gear might be helpful.

    Ah, I have the answer.

    Get rid of the Defender and get a Rangie.

    It is easy for me to tell what gear my LT77 is in just by feeling the position of the gearstick.

    That is one of the downsides with the 6 speed box in the Puma....its easy to get lost in that maze.

    its a plunger switch, the existing one cant be made to do other gears BUT some smart usage of similar switches, a drill and a tap will let you setup what you want to.

    I'm getting used to it, there is a nice and positive centre between 3 and 4.

    I was forever indicating to get the rain off the windscreen, and using the wipers to let other drivers know my turning intentions.

    Now I just have to learn that I can't put the key in the ignition before getting in.

    wierd as the box in my deefer 2002 is as tight as... nicely gated... i think it has had a bit of pandering from the old guy that used to own it..

    seems to be loosening up a bit now tho.. but it isnt like stirring rice pudding..
