Yes I think that is correct V8 v tdi thing. You will find the gear selector arrangement differs from disco to defender on the R380 so probably the same for the LT77.
I've got a 200tdi and LT77 in my County. Its a 56A serial no. box, so long stick (defender) according to the info on Ashcrofts site.
The vehicle came with a spare LT77, a 52A serial box, so also long stick.
Problem is, the spare box is about 5" longer in the input shaft and bell housing. Does that mean its from a V8 and therefore no use to me, or can I swap the input shafts over if the one I remove from the vehicle is OK?
The gearbox that's currently fitted has basically no synchro in 2nd and not much in 3rd, but apart from that doesn't make any nasty noises. A little bit of a bearing noise in neutral, but not bad.
What are my likely options?
Also, any idea what a price a reasonable used gearbox would be, and the best place to get one if required?
Steve

Hi,
both are long stick boxes,
the 56A is the 200 tdi defender
the 52A is the early 3.5 RR classic
you can't just swap the pinions as they are a different thickness,
also the 56A will be a later stronger suffix G or H and the 52A will be the early weak suffix D,
Dave
Thanks Dave.
Sounds like either repairing the 56A box or replacing with a reasonable condition used one is the way to go.
Is there a big cost difference between repairs to a suffix G or H box?
Steve
I have a lt77 in my 200tdi disco. Have been quoted $5000 and $6500
from 2 ind, Melb LR outfits to remove rebuild and refit tx and transfer
with new clutch.
Better than a unknown second hand box.
Andrew
Thanks for the info, but we obviously have a different view on spending $5-6K.
That money is close to the value of the Disco in reasonable condition.
I'd take a chance on a on a used box for a few hundred from a reasonable source any day rather than spend that sort of money on that vehicle.
