Unusual to have the numbers of teeth on both gears to be an even number. I remember from my studies long ago of Theory of Gears and Gearing that this was not considered good practice and at least one of the gears in a combination should have teeth in a prime number.

Interesting comments on the material selections on your site Dave. Must say I have always thought that the std 3.54 is the strongest of any of the previously available cw+p sets.

How much stronger would you say your 3.5 is compared to the std 3.54?

Would the reverse cut 3.5 ratio have the strength I need for the front of my 120" running 35" tyres? I have already broken two stock 3.54 cwps while reversing out of tight places here.
May be more economical for me then cutting and swapping diffs etc.

    Tony,

I would think that the reverse cut ring and pinion will be weaker than the standard set for reversing under load, maybe the new 3.5:1(conventional cut) set will be a better choice in the front of yours.Where as for me I would prefer the reverse cut in the front for hill climbs.

    New Ashcroft R&P

Hi Brian you are correct it is not usual, but this was our choice, we have to consider the best option for the situation. We can design the gears for optimum strength, or for a 'migrating' contact wear pattern. Our option is to go for greater strength as this is the usual failure mode. Regards and thanks for your input. Hi Ian, how do you think this would affect wear/life in a daily driven vehicle?

Hi Ben In practice I don't think this will make any difference to the wear, the 'migrating' wear pattern is something we all are taught about but in practice if all other factors are correct ie material, hardness, diff set up, etc then it makes little or no difference. Regards Ian Ashcroft
