but again its because its hand built! To be fair if we stick to topic a direct comparo between a defender ute and a toyota cruiser ute the defender is massively cheap i seem to recall about 79k for a cruiser 79 series ute.. the chassis are thin... the engine (another debate) is questionable and having spent long hours testing them i can honestly say they are one of the most uncomfortable cars i have ever driven. Ok tho if you dont have kidneys..

some of the deals going at the moment are quite good for the defender utes... but then again you have the triton, hilux, bt50, great wall, rodeo, izuzu to choose from all down to what you need / want...

$52k for a new Defer is not too bad when compared to a new Landcruiser tray back, i believe they are around $70K, but i do agree with you, its a lot of money for a fairly basic vehicle.

On the reliability front, my father has a 98 Hyundai excel which is used on a country mail run, it has over 500k Kms on it, with good maintenance its still very good, on the flip side, my wife has a friend with the same year model Excel sitting in her driveway completely stuffed because it wasn't serviced, i think she said its had 2 oil changes in 90k km lol.

I don't know - you tell me. Plenty of roads round my place, but my 2a is registered - unlike next door's Hilux! And a few years ago I bought a Series 3 from a farm in the Riverina - came complete with paperwork - it had never been registered, but had a permit to travel when new from the dealer's to the property. (Never been serviced either by the looks!)

I'm sure it could be built for less but then i nt would have to be built in India. I too have heard that comment about it being the most expensive to build due to the manual input. If it is, they must have great profit margins on a D4 :D

Quite likely. However I bet the R&D costs are a fraction of what they are for the other models. ;) The cost of a car to a manufacturer is are the costs to produce, and the R&D costs which they divide over an estimated run.

Yes. Actually, I would be surprised if any car manufacturer really has a good idea as to how much it costs them to make a car. As you say, the actual cost to build it is fairly easy, and this cost probably is higher for the Defender, because of the high labour content.

But the other part of the cost is the cost of design, but also the cost of tooling. The Defender uses a minimum of tooling some of it fifty years old, and much of the design work has long been written off. On the other hand, all of its other current production vehicles are relatively new designs, which have heavy design and tooling costs to be charged against them. The problem is that how much of this cost is charged against each vehicle depends on how many you build - and the number used will, for the new designs, be an estimate (also known as a guess).

You Have to be KIDDING MATE!!:eek: My 130 tdi trayback has been used everyday for six years, has over 200,000ks, repairs?, water pump, Pgasket, belt tensioner, belts a couple of wheel bearings, a few odd sods, but for the work its done and the reliability its given, for the price i paid, and what its worth now!!, i would not like to own anything else really.:)
