    WHEEL SPACERS

At Capalaba swap meet yesterday the guy on the site opposite me had stock of sets of 2" wheel spacers, Chev/HQ Holden axle to Ford wheels. I overheard him tell several enquirers that they were legal to use and that he had had a car pass inspection with spacers installed.

I went and spoke to him and he would not accept that spacers are totally illegal in all states on registered vehicles unless they were original equipment. Went on about his car being passed at some sort of inspection (he avoided my query as to what sort of inspection and by whom) with spacers installed.

He was selling lots of shiny dress-up sorts of gear for street machines and rods but nothing performance oriented just bling.

    spacers are illigeal

    adaptors can be engineered

this is a bone of contention for me, everyone lumps adaptors into the spacers group...

spacers, do that, they space the rim out off the hub shortening the effective length of the OE stud.

adaptors, while they do ''space'' the rim out from the hub, they do it by bolting to the OE studs (no change in effective stud length from OE) and offering a new set of wheel studs, in this case a differant pattern for the rim to bolt back onto.

a rim spaced 2'' further out will put more load on a bearing, spacer or adaptor, but the spacer will add weakened studs to the mix.

i have spoken to an engineer in NSW that said that ''its all in the wording on the engineering report''

    cheers phil

Phil, can you put up pix of both to differentiate?

Are you referring to spacers that use the standard bolt pattern and longer studs to mount the standard wheel onto these longer studs?

From Qld. Transport "Modifications - General Conditions for alternative rims and tyres".

"The fitting of spacers or adaptors between wheels and hubs, additional to those provided by the vehicle manufacturer, is not permitted."

"The track of a car or car derivative may be increased by up to 26mm. beyond the maximum specified by the vehicle manufacturer for the particular model of vehicle."

So these items are illegal on two counts, not permitted at all, and would increase the vehicle track by 100 mm if permitted.

as im not in QLD...(dreadding the day i want to move back and have to bring the ute with me) and i dont know where the new RTA rules are at.
the discussion i had with my engineer was over 2 years ago and valid at the time.
im pretty sure that with your trade background brian, you should at least agree with some of what ive said, legal or not.

    cheers phil

Guess the answer is in the question. Why would a manufacturer include adaptors or spacers as original? I don't know of any that would.

If fitted OEm they are legal.

Like wheel rims wider than 8"

Illegal in all states UNLESS factory fitted

XU1's (LJs at least) also run a spacer from the factory.
