Why is there always a fixation with Bosch alternators for a 300Tdi? I had mine repaired by a plain old Denso agent who was able to get whatever parts were required and it was less than $100. Not sure who did it but my mechanic sent it off so I doubt it would have travelled far.

Maybe contact PJL Diesel as above and find out how much for a new one, I'm pretty sure its an Iskra 11203205. Might be cheaper than a new Denso one.

Auto Electrics Australia - Alternator, Starter Motor, Solenoid, Rectifier & Regulator Parts

Quick Search on here shows a ALT7813 standard 100AMP unit - Auto Electrics Australia - Alternator, Starter Motor, Solenoid, Rectifier & Regulator Parts

They also have a high output, dust proof 120AMP version with dual internal fans - ALT7814

    Wonder how much they are

Pays to read the whole post must be an age thing.. but you answered your question with the MXA828 then. MM # A127IR-100A-14V, A127 being the pattern.

I wouldn't be so gung ho on the Bosch either. Bosch for aftermarket and Bosch OEM really aren't that different manufacture wise and Bosch now outsource a lot of their aftermarket product for manufacture.
Bosch are OEM for most of the Mercedes passenger and commercial truck & bus vehicles and believe me, warranty claims abound... .

I believe Leece Neville may have a range of smaller sized units these days unless you can fit a C-15 CAT pad mount under there somewhere!

    Cheers

Because Bosch is fitted to pretty much every locally made vehicle so they are cheap and plentiful- i'm not paying $00 for a LR alt if i dont have to.

I contacted PLJ and they have none in stock so my old man is taking it to his auto leccy does work for him.

That's a pretty damn good price.

Interesting the Cross reference list though - Ford, Mitsu and Bosch.

    As Joel said, looks good.

The only thing I was warned about once was that ag spec alternators aren't suited to high speed operation.
I was told why but can't remember ATM (CRAFT disease )
Anyone able to shed any light on that ?

TDI , high speed - not in the same breathe .

Probably a dumb question but would there be any problem running an 8 rib pulley with a 7 rib belt, tracking wouldnt be an issue ?

[QUOTE=rick130;1265996]Can't recall re the brushes, but the front bearing in a Defender one (65amp) is an off the shelf bearing (can't recall the size, swapped it out about 20,000km ago) and the needle roller in the rear can be re-packed if it hasn't been totally fubared, mine has been re-packed three times now, the last time I used Redline CV2 grease, which is basically a no-melt race car CV/tripot grease, but the worst part with the little sucker is that it's unsealed. ................

Regarding this rear needle roller being unsealed, after replacing grease in mine I put an O ring from a box of assorted ones over the rear rotor shaft. Trial and error to find the best fitting size. Best sealing one should probably give slight resistance to assembly and turning when assembled. Haven't yet pulled mine apart again to check durability of this O ring, but hopefully it is still there keeping all dust out.

Another modification I did to standard Magneti Marelli alternator while it was apart: Noticed that compared with Bosch ones it had very few holes in the housing to allow cooling air (which is expelled by the fan next to the pulley) in. So bored some more in places where there is nothing behind them to obstruct air flow. This should make it less prone to cooking itself with heavy electrical load in hot conditions. Probably the O ring dust seal on the rear bearing would be more necessary with the extra air - and dust with it passing through the alternator.
