The main reason IMO for the load leveller in the classic rangies was roll stiffness and handling. The self-leveller allowed softer rear springs with less roll-stiffness on the rear axle, this causes the front end to take more of the cornering load and break traction sooner. Using stiffer rear springs instead of the central load leveller can produce vicious oversteer, certainly does in my classic. Fun if the driver is expecting it, but a little scary for the passengers.
Later on front roll stiffness was increased so the rear could handle the extra roll-stiffness without the oversteer issues. The disco arrived after all these changes had been made to the classic chassis.
Cost would also be a big reason, but I believe changes to the roll-stiffness through front bushings, springs and later swaybars made it possible to remove the self-leveller without the problems that would have occurred earlier.
excellent news
I was given a set of disco rear springs +2" but I really wanted constant load as I have no self leveler on my RRC.
It seems that as the disco has no boag the springs must he a higher rate so![]()
If you are looking for something to level the car without putting in heavy springs, I had polyair bags in my rear springs with great success, on 5psi a nice ride when empty and then put 25psi in them and you can carry heavy weights or tow a big trailer with the car sitting level and still a good ride.
I have air bags in and think they are great but I have a standard lift and was given these disco +2" springs they where free so might as well try em![]()
airbags are well worth the moeny though, got mine from the US
