I don't know yet but I'm expecting catastrofic failure. Head gasket shouldn't have let go this quick or with such spectacular results. I'm expecting bits to be missing inside the engine.

All cars I have worked on with a head gasket failure have given you plenty of warning to fix it before erupting. That included a mate who used paint in the bores of his old car to help seal the head gasket and damaged bores. That thing ran for months before falling to bits.

Well after several years of pretending the old engine was not sitting in the shed I opened it this weekend. Still won't turn over. From the sump it looks like new, From the rocker it looks like new.
But once the head was off.....

Looks kind of messy in there. will see how it all cleans up.
I have discovered that most wipes clean easily with some degreaser.

All in all still no screaming here i leaked.
Also removed the internal engine oil cooler thinking that might have let go but no still good.

Suspect I will be able to salvage most of it at this rate. Debating if it is worth rebuilding and sealing up for storage.

Looks kinda similar to my 300tdi which overheated.... except all of the pistons are still intact!

Do you know if the head is still good? I would be pretty wary of putting it back on assuming it is prone to softening like the tdi heads are.

Should clean up fine As long as there are no cracks then the head is fine. Will have to clean up the bottom end to see how that fares.
At least it is the spare engine.
