I'm about to install a winch for the Defender and was wondering abotu wiring it up.
I have a Redarc dual battery setup - which battery should I wire the winch into, the main or auxiliary?
PS - I *think* the Redarc I have isolates the auxiliary from the main when the motors not running.
I would wire it off the main battery so as when in use the alternator is supplying the power for the winch. Jim

Redarc recommend using the 200amp unit if doing a lot of winching as the relay is rated at only 100Amps continuous. The autoelec near me has a Rangy and hasn't ruined his 100Amp unit yet.
There is an override switch to enable the use of both batteries as the unit will switch off the relay if the voltage drops below 12.5 (or thereabouts) but remember you need good wires to the secondary battery.
Speaking from experience, a 100 amp wont cut it for winching, well not very well at the least, it takes a while to feed from the second battery to "recharge" the battery you are winching from.
And thats not a lot of winching either..
lots of winches can spike to 400amps
run the winch from the main battery as the direct connect to the alternator will assist heaps.
avoid the battery controller altogether if you can.

You need to connect to the main ( cranking ) battery and if you want to use both batteries, ( which is a good idea ) you need to bypass your isolator with either a 200 amp continuos rated solenoid or better still, a marine battery switch.
A marine battery switch usually has a 250 amp continuos rating.
