Pulled the box apart with googles help and put it all back together. After doing this he found he had left out a small ball shaped part. The auto will now not engage reverse. Is this an easy fix or is the transmissin stuffed? Should I still buy it, the bloke wants $1700 for the old girl, the rest is in pretty good order.

Depends where the"ball shaped part" is supposed to be fitted.
Most of the check balls tend to come from the valve body which is removable via the oil pan. But be wary if your not experienced working on autos. Lots of things go ping when you remove them!

There are a few on here knowledgeable on ZF repair, but youmay need to post a piccie of the part to identify it.
