Centre Diff in or out?
G'day everyone,
My '84 V8 County with LT95 grumbles under load in 3rd and 4th gear low range when under around 600rpm. Is this normal? It doesn't grumble at all in high range or when in 1st or 2nd low.
Thank you!

Not saying this is the case but something to consider is the low range gear sometimes come loose (see Stirsilvers thread for the results)
I had one come loose but must admit I didnt hear it.
My Chev powered LT95 does this. I put it down to incorrect gear. Its not really fair on the drivetrain to have a load at those revs.![]()
This is true tho it could be the low range gear mooving on the center diff hemisphere which is were its bolted id drop the handbrake assy and take off the spedo housing and inspect the bolts that hold the low gear on my V8 LT95 in my old rangie had these said bolts rattle out and make mince metal of the spedo housing and it had a similar grumble down low .
Tho mine was the worse case ive seen and heard it was a simple half day fix in situ the trick is to lock the center diff before removing the hemi to work on it on the beanch as this meshes the sliding gear on the front output shaft and makes the job a breaze to do .
Once the center diff is locked and you have the spedo housing off its just a matter of selecting neutral on the transfer lever and drawing out the center diff assy with both the slip on high range gear (small front one) and the big low range gear (this would also be a great time to fit the tougher 1 peice center diff cross shaft) once out you can then remove the bolts from the low range gear and replace with or refit old ones with plenty of loctite once its out and you see how it all works you will see how simple it realy is i did mine all up in about 3hrs and even cleaned up and adjusted the hand brake all the under car work was done on the street in front of my house and was verry accessable in the rangie so should be lots more roomy with the county.
Hope my ramblings help you with your prob .
