drive train problem on 95 disco TDi

    OK,

It's Missy A's Dad here (Disco Daddy-non Aulro user).
WIth engine running normally, vehicle wont drive at all (fwd/rev). Also trouble locking wheels when turning steering to right.

When front wheels jacked up, 1st gear engaged (engine off), DS wheel turns freely even when the NS wheel is held, whereas the NS wont spin free when DS held. Further, clunk noise comes from DS stub axle area when slopping wheels back and forth, making me very suspicious that the DS CV has gone.

Anyone got any ideas how to prove this with certainty? Further, assuming it is the CV, even though we do have manual (and plenty of beer), any tutorials/tips/advice on special tools re getting to the CV and rebuilding it would be appreciated. Plus anyone know cost/source of good quality CV kit?

    Any help would be appreciated.

First thing first engage your diff lock and the car will drive on RWD. As it stands you will see the front tailshaft rotate when you are in gear. With the diff lock engaged it should then drive normally.
Removing the 6 bolts from outside the front hub and withdrawing the stub axle will allow you to check for fragments inside. The whole hub assembly is held to the axle end with 6 bolts too. Not too hard to remove as an assembly. A complete assembly from a wreck might be the cheapest repair option.

if your drain the diff oil you can get eyes on the spider gears through the drain and fill holes.

jack stand the front end of the vehicle and rotate the wheels, you'll be able to work out exacty which one is broken by the way the spider gears react to various combinations of turning/holding the propshaft and the wheels.
