How to fix squealing Defender brakes.

Fit Bendix 4wd pads to the rear. I just did and the noise is gone. Completely.

Have to fit some of them - mine are shocking and I vowed to replace them when we got back from the last trip.

coat the back of the pads with antisqueal paste.

    $20ish a bottle from supercrap.

does about 10 sets of pads.

Some pads will squeal regardless of how old they are, it's the compound and surface finish of the pad and disc that determines this.
As they start to bite and then with only light pedal pressure they can start to vibrate and that's how you get the squeal.

I've tried the anti-squeal compounds and they don't last too long, the rears are back to squealing in no time on a dusty road.
Ferodo 4WD pads are bad for this, I don't know why I keep going back to them ? (yes I do, cost, and they work OK and the discs look great, but the squeal drives me insane......)

Bendix 4WD pads have been great on the Patrol

    Small correction.

1 set of pads, then the kids get it and silence a fireplace, fibro shears, laundry sink, door, shed wall, floor, shelf, new clothes.

That stuff goes a surprisingly long way for such a small bottle.

I was doing that every service. It works for a while and then the noise comes back.

I've found simply turning the backing plates over so that the hole is against the opposite end (ie leading or trailing) of the pad stops it for a while. When it starts again I change them back. It seems to work for somewhere between 5000 and 10000km. It's a bit of a pain, but it doesn't cost me anything, and the paste didn't work for me either.
